Top California Grocers Hobbled by Strike

So I went to Ralphs this morning to buy some bacon to make for breakfast, (Somebody near my condo was cooking bacon this morning, so I of course woke up with a wicked craving.) and when I pulled into the parking lot there were dozens of people walking the picket line.
I had almost forgotten about the strike completely until this morning. I don’t know all the specifics, but I hope this all works out well.

  1. G de Bolanos says:

The California strike is far reaching. We produce and buy on a small scale golden pineapples in Costa Rica and export them to the USA and Europe.
Our competitors are BIG tropical fruit exporters, but in reality we cannot compete with them. We look for small market niches; trying to improve incomes for what were subsistance farmers and provide an alternative to the often difficult demands of the big tropical fruit companies to our clients.
This strike may well ruin what we have accomplished over the past two years.
Perishable goods going to the the sixth largest economy in the world are being diverted and sold at lower prices on the East Coast and Europe. We cannot sustain loses nor can we divert our own ships to other ports.
Globalization is truly an amazing phenomenon, but at this moment it is hurting people economically that don’t even know what a Wal-mart or Von’s is.
And as a side line, making $6.00 as a bagger sounds like an enormous amount of money to many people here – they’d move to the USA at the drop of a hat to earn that sum.
I believe that we are all on the edge of major economic changes – like it or not.
