So everyone on the planet is probably talking about Saddam being captured. What his capture means for Iraq, the Middle East, and more. I would like to take a moment and talk about a story that has not become mainstream yet. The re-alignment of World powers and relations.
Since the end of WW2 the world has been divided into two distinct sides. NATO led by the United States, and WARSAW led by the Soviet Union. Democracy vs. Communism as it were. With the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the cold war the United States has emerged as the sole superpower in the world. Russia and China are formidable opponents but are not viewed on the same platform. Any time there is an unbalance in nature, the environment changes, and balance is restored. This change is what we are witnessing now.
The European Union (EU) was formed to create a larger, unified Europe to conduct trade and level the playing field so to speak with the United States. Tariffs on steel by the US and Agriculture and exports from States where President Bush is politically weak is a perfect example of this. The creation of Galileo, GPS satellites controlled by the EU (the current GPS system is controlled by the US), is another more serious example of things to come.
Let me explain the significance of the GPS satellites in more detail. The US created and launched the GPS satellites to provide extremely accurate navigation detail. This information is used by ships, submarines, ground troops, aircraft, and of course missiles (of the cruse missile, and intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) varieties). Now you might ask, But I can by a GPS receiver at the sporting goods store, why does it matter? Well, when President Clinton signed into law allowing civilian applications of GPS it included; 1) accuracy controls for the civilian receivers, and 2) the ability to adjust and decrease the sensitivity of receivers without the Militarys hardware. So every time we go to war or launch an attack, the Military simple dials down the GPS accuracy to cripple the effectiveness of our enemies systems.
But most of Europe and the EU are NATO allies with access to the special Military GPS hardware; I dont understand why this matters? The only reason that the EU would be launching GPS satellites that it controls, separate to the US is to prepare for eventual conflict with the US.
The only reason that the EU would be launching GPS satellites that it controls, separate to the US is to prepare for eventual conflict with the US.
Did that sink in? What this recent conflict in Iraq has shown is a fragmentation in the NATO powers. This is displayed as a division between the countries that make up the EU and the US. Remember who was vocal against action in Iraq: France, Germany, and Denmark, large countries driving the EU. England has yet to join the EU. Many speculate that this is due to the impact to the economy, the adoption of the Euro, etc. I agree, the economic impact would be great, but I think that England is staying out of the EU because of its alliance with the US, and joining the EU would mean severing that alliance.
We are all witnessing the beginnings of a major shift in World politics, one that has not occurred since Hitler.
Galileo, GPS, and unfriendly Europeans
The US and the EU are still not able to agree on Galileo standards because of concerns that it will not be possible to jam the civilian Galileo signal without effecting the military GPS signal.
