Don’t use a PR firm

Such a great quote I’m saving it on my blog:

“Don’t use a PR firm unless you are so successful that you need someone to help you manage inbound press interest.” – @cdixon

Love you and your blog Max, but I compeltely disagree with this post. A great PR firm should help their clients with the right brand strategy, elevating the brand as a whole, while helping to proactively tell great, perception-changing (or enhancing) stories. And that’s not even taking into account other essential services like crisis communications. A great PR firm should be a company’s communciations partner at the c-suite level – not just staff to respond to incoming media inquiries.

Chris – I agree with you – a great PR firm should do all of those things. The Venturehacks post and similar in the industry started because that’s not what happens in most cases. The generalization is that Startup/Adolescent companies engage PR firms to help them get press and market awareness. These firms come with a monthly retainer price tag – with no guarantees of results. For a young company to spend $5-$10k a month in this engagement is a complete waste of money. When a firm evolves to a point that the PR expense is just a drop in their overall marketing budget its totally worth while. I think the best quote I’ve heard so far is to “only engage a PR firm when you have more press than you can handle on your own”.
